teamLab Forest is a new kind of museum created by art collective teamLab, consisting of a Catching and Collecting Forest and an Athletics Forest.

The Catching and Collecting Forest is a new learning space based on the concept of Catch, Study, Release, in which people explore the world with their bodies, discovering, catching, and broadening their interests based on what they catch. Explore with your smartphone, capture various creatures, study them, and create your very own collection book.

The Athletics Forest is a new creative athletic space that trains spatial awareness based on the concept of understanding the world through the body and thinking of the world three-dimensionally. Use your body in this complex, three-dimensional space and immerse yourself in an interactive world.

Catching and Collecting Forest - A Whole Year per Year

The Catching and Collecting Forest is a new learning space based on the concept of Catch, Study, Release, in which people explore the world with their bodies, discovering, catching, and broadening their interests based on what they catch. Explore with your smartphone, catch various animals, study them, and create your very own collection book.

Depending on the season, different animals live in this forest and ocean that change with the flow of real time. When you touch an animal, it will turn to face you or run away.

Download the Catching and Collecting Forest smartphone application.
When you use your smartphone's camera to look at an animal moving in the space and shoot a Study Arrow at the animal in the camera’s view, the arrow flies out from your phone into the real space. When the Study Arrow reaches the animal, it disappears from the space and is added to your smartphone’s collection. Information about the animals you catch will be stored in the app's collection book.

When you swipe a captured animal towards a location you can see in the app’s camera, the animal is released and returns to that location.

You can also throw a Study Net at your feet to catch animals. Work together with those around you, use your body to drive animals into the Study Net to catch them, and watch as they disappear from the space and, at the same time, appear in your collection book. Swipe the captured animals away to release them at your feet.

The more you catch the same animal, the more detailed information you can record in your collection book.

Athletics Forest

teamLab Athletics Forest is a new “creative physical space” that trains spatial recognition ability by promoting the growth of the hippocampus of the brain. It is based on the concept of understanding the world through the body and thinking of the world three-dimensionally. In a complex, physically challenging, three-dimensional space, immerse your body in an interactive world.

Graffiti Nature in a Beating Valley - Symbiotic Lives, A Whole Year per Year, Red List

Beating Valley is a three-dimensional terrain that shifts and undulates as visual and physical cognition become separated.

All the various creatures drawn by everyone live in the Beating Valley. Color in a creature on the paper provided, and see the picture you have drawn come to life and move in front of you.
Living things eat and are eaten by other living things in one shared ecosystem.
The creatures you draw will multiply if they eat other living things, but they will die and disappear if they do not eat enough, or if they are eaten by other creatures.

The salamanders eat the snakes, the snakes eat the lizards, the lizards eat the frogs, and the frogs eat the butterflies, each one propagating as a result. Likewise, the butterflies multiply in places where flowers grow.
Although flowers will bloom if people stay still, their petals will scatter if people walk around and step on them. Salamanders will die if people step on them too much.
Living creatures spread throughout the world, increasing and decreasing in number. The creatures you have drawn may be increasing somewhere.

At times, the artwork responds to Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives II, and flowers of the current season in the real world begin to grow and bloom from the creatures. When people step on the animals made of flowers, the flower petals scatter.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List is a database of the conservation status of biological species. Wildlife assessed in the Red List, including threatened and endangered species, appear in this work.

teamLab
teamLab (f. 2001) is an international art collective. Their collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, and the natural world. Through art, the interdisciplinary group of specialists, including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects, aims to explore the relationship between the self and the world, and new forms of perception. In order to understand the world around them, people separate it into independent entities with perceived boundaries between them. teamLab seeks to transcend these boundaries in our perceptions of the world, of the relationship between the self and the world, and of the continuity of time. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous, borderless continuity. teamLab exhibitions have been held in cities worldwide, including New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Silicon Valley, Beijing, and Melbourne among others. teamLab museums and large-scale permanent exhibitions include teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets in Tokyo, teamLab Borderless Shanghai, and teamLab SuperNature Macao, with more to open in cities including Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Hamburg, Jeddah, and Utrecht. teamLab’s works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Asia Society Museum, New York; Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, Istanbul; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and Amos Rex, Helsinki. teamlab.art Biographical Documents teamLab is represented by Pace Gallery, Martin Browne Contemporary and Ikkan Art.
