This exhibition is a night open-air museum, featuring a collection of artworks that use the plants, lake, and the ecosystems and environment of Nagai Botanical Garden.

Contours of a Life-like Existence
Nagai Botanical Garden is an outdoor botanical garden in Osaka that opened in 1974. It is located inside Nagai Park that opened in 1944 as an urban park that includes facilities such as a baseball stadium. Nagai Botanical Garden stretches over an area of 240,000-sqm with a large lake in the center, and its flora change with the seasons throughout the year.

50 years since its opening, the garden is now home to many wild birds, such as Northern goshawks and owls, which are placed at the top of the food chain and thus dependent on a healthy ecosystem to exist. In the middle of the city, this man-made botanical park and its lake sustain the ecosystem together with humans, as a man-made ecosystem within the city that includes human beings. 

Where are the contours of the existence of life?

Objects like stones and man-made creations maintain a stable structure on their own. A stone can continue to exist in a closed box, sealed off from the outside world, but life cannot sustain its existence in such a box because it does not maintain an independent structure.

Life is like a vortex created in the ocean. If a vortex is taken out of the ocean and placed in a closed box, the vortex will disappear. The vortex cannot maintain a stable structure on its own; rather, it is created and sustained by water that continuously flows inwards and outwards. The vortex is an existence within the flow, and the contour of its existence is ambiguous.

The same is true of life. It consumes external matter and energy as food and discharges it, sustaining its ordered structure as the energy dissipates. Life does not exist by itself; rather, it is the environment that is continuous with it that maintains the structure of life. In other words, the contour of life’s existence is not a physical, bodily boundary, but an ambiguous one that includes the continuity with its environment. Life is not defined by physical borders. Life is continuous with its environment, an existence whose boundaries are ambiguous.

teamLab’s art project Digitized Nature explores how nature can become art. The concept of the project is that non-material digital technology can turn nature into art without harming it. 

As the artworks in this exhibition are influenced by the trees and birds that live in the garden, if the wildlife disappear, the artworks will also disappear. The trees and birds cannot be separated from the ecosystem such as the garden’s forest or lake, so if the environment is not sustained, the trees and birds will cease to exist, and as a consequence, the artworks as well. The artworks’ existence is not defined by their physical surface boundaries, but is continuous and ambiguous with its surrounding environment.

The artworks transform interactively, influenced by wind, rain, as well as by the behavior of the people in it, making the environment and the people a part of the works. The people and the artworks, the trees, the forest and the lake, the ecosystem and the environment, all form a continuity without boundaries.

teamLab aims to explore an environment where human perception expands from the artwork itself to the environment.

Resonating Microcosms in the Common Camellia Garden - Solidified Light Color, Dusk to Dawn

A camellia garden filled with ovoids that transform from day to night.
Under the sun, the ovoids reflect the world around them.As the sun sets, the ovoids begin to shine by themselves. When an ovoid is pushed by a person, blown by the wind, or hit by rain, it shines brightly and produces a tone as it rises back up on its own. The surrounding ovoids respond one after another, resonating and emitting the same tone and light color.
The ovoids begin to flicker slowly when the wind is quiet and people do not push them.The ovoids can change into a total of 61 newly-defined Solidified Light Colors.

Forest of Autonomous Resonating Life - Eucalyptus

The densely packed ovoids of light, standing in the Eucalyptus park, are autonomous. When an ovoid is pushed over by people moving through or blown down by the wind, it rises back up as the color of its light changes and emits a tone specific to that color. The surrounding ovoids respond one after another, resonating and emitting the same tone and light color.
When the wind is not blowing and the people nearby are not interacting with the ovoids, their lights begin to blink slowly.

If a wave of light comes from the other side, it signifies the presence of people there. People gain a heightened sense of awareness of the existence of other people in the same space.

المواد الصناعية كالخرسانة، التي ابتكرها الإنسان، تتمتع بثبات هيكلي ذاتي يُشبه الأحجار. في المقابل، تظهر الدوامات كتحف فنية مائية تتشكل وتُحتفظ بها من خلال تدفق الماء المستمر ذهاباً وإياباً، مكونةً بذلك هيكلاً منظماً ضمن رقصة التدفق. وعلى غرار ذلك، تحافظ الحياة على نظامها من خلال تدفق دائم للطاقة والمادة، مستمدةً من الغذاء.
 
هذا العمل الفني، بطبيعته، لا يمتلك هيكلاً مستقلاً. بل ينبع الهيكل من التدفق نفسه، مانحاً إياه خصائص الليونة والمرونة التي تميز الكائنات الحية. التدفق هنا هو المهندس الذي يصوغ النظام من عمق الفوضى.
 
يتفاعل العمل بحساسية مع بيئته، متأثراً بعوامل كالرياح والأمطار والرطوبة، مما يؤدي إلى تغيرات ملحوظة في عدد الأعمدة، حركتها وارتفاعها.
 
كما يستجيب العمل بطريقة تفاعلية للأشخاص، مضيفاً بعداً جديداً للتجربة البصرية والحسية.

Sculptures of Dissipative Birds in the Wind

Life is not defined by physical borders. Life is continuous with its environment, an existence whose boundaries are ambiguous.
The giant sculptures in this artwork depict the continuous dissipation of energy into the environment by the birds that fly around them.
When birds fly, that energy affects the environment, such as the flow of air.The wind blowing and the birds flying at the present moment, and the memories of birds that flew by from sunrise to sunset overlap. The sculptures depict the energy dissipated into the world by the birds.
If birds do not fly around the artwork, the sculptures will dissolve into the darkness, as though the artwork is non-existent. Therefore, in order to create an environment on the lake’s island that is favorable for birds, flora was planted to attract insects that birds could feed on. The sculptures are created by the birds that gather around the flora. The existence of both the birds and insects, however, is not sustained only by the flora of the island, but rather by the larger ecosystem made up of the forest and lake of the vast botanical garden.
The sculptures themselves transcend the physical boundaries of existence; they are continuous and ambiguous with the surrounding environment.

Floating Resonating Lamps on Oike Lake - Fire

Each of the lamps on the Oike Lake’s surface floats autonomously. When a person stands still near a lamp, or when the wind blows a lamp, it shines brightly and produces a tone. The light of that lamp spreads to nearby lamps one by one, as they resonate with the same tone, continuing on to the trees on the islet in the center of the lake. If light approaches from the other side it signifies the presence of people there, making people more aware of the existence of others in the same space.
When the wind is not blowing and people are not nearby, the lamps begin to blink slowly.

This artwork is located at the entrance of a forest called Nagai Satoyama.
When people stop inside the artwork space, a new set of lines is born and spreads across the space.The combination of the lines turns the trees into flattened layers.

Walk, Walk, Walk - Secondary Forest

A group of anonymous and diverse figures walk along the trees in the forest.
Viewers will make choices, as they confront the figures.
The Zen expression “Hoho kore dojo” says every step is a place to learn. The figures of the artwork walk endlessly while confronting new situations. Confronting new figures one after another, people also make choices along their own path.
The artwork is not a pre-recorded image that is played back: it is created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. Previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur. The picture at this moment can never be seen again.

Universe of Fire Particles in the Forest - Secondary Forest

The flames of Universe of Fire Particles in the Forest - Secondary Forest change shape due to a dark, absolute presence.
Flames are a phenomenon of light and heat generated by combustion; it is a vaporized substance in a flow, a decomposed substance. It is our sensory experience of seeing what is in between phenomenon and substance. We perceive this sensory experience of the flame as a physical object, and at times feel that life resides within it.
Lines are drawn in relation to the flow of combusting gas, and the flames are created by the accumulation of those lines in three dimensions. The lines are then “flattened” using what teamLab considers to be Ultrasubjective Space to represent the flames.
teamLab is exploring the concept of Distributed Art.If you launch the Distributed Fire smartphone application and approach this artwork, the flame will ignite in your phone, and you will be able to take the artwork home with you. When you bring that flame close to another person's smartphone, a flame will similarly alight in their phone. As you connect the flame, and they connect that flame with someone else, the flame will spread all over the world. The distributed flames are displayed on the Map of The Flame.
Distributed Art duplicates itself, or a part of an artwork is distributed among people. Then, once in the hands of the people, the artwork is further actively distributed, and also makes copies of itself. The artworks will be distributed and exist on people's networks and become decentralized. When the artwork exists on the network, it continues to exist even if the original disappears.

The meadow of Muhlenbergia capillaris grasses shine brightly.

When people stand still near them, they shine more brightly and produce a tone. The light then radiates out, spreading to nearby Muhlenbergia capillaris as they resonate with the same tone.

If a wave of light comes from the other side, it signifies the presence of people there. People gain a heightened sense of awareness of the existence of other people in the same space.

The light transmitted from Resonating Microcosms in the Common Camellia Garden - Liquified Light Color causes the trees’ lights to change color and produce a tone specific to that color. The tree’s light spreads to the surrounding trees one by one, continuously resonating with  the same tone.

About Ticket

Will tickets be available on the day？

If tickets have not yet sold out, you can purchase same-day tickets from the official ticket website.
Tickets are sometimes available for purchase at the venue, but those ticket prices may differ and they may be sold out.

Where can I buy tickets?

1. Purchasing from the Official Ticket Website
　A credit card is required to purchase tickets on the official ticket website.
　The date/time of tickets purchased on the official ticket website can be changed up to three times. (Changes can be made up until 21:00 on the day of your visit.)
　The date/time of tickets purchased through any source other than the official ticket website cannot be changed after purchase.
　Latest information on closure due to severe weather and about other matters will be sent to the email address that was used at the time of purchase.

2. Purchasing from a Booking Agency
　When purchasing from the below booking agency, in addition to cash, several different payment methods are available.
　For details on the available payment methods, please check with the booking agency.
　*Booking agencies cannot change your ticket’s date. But the date of a ticket bought through the official ticket website can be changed up to three times. (Changes are possible until 9:00 PM on the day of entry.)

3. Purchasing at the Venue
　Only same-day tickets can be purchased at the venue. Same-day tickets may sell out.
　Please also note that the price of tickets bought at the venue differ from those purchased in advance.

Can I change or cancel the date of my ticket?

Changes or cancellations cannot be made after a purchase is completed. The ticket date/time can be changed only for tickets purchased on the official ticket website.
The date/time can be changed up to three times. Please make any changes by 21:00 of the visit date stated on your ticket via the “Modify ticket date” button on your QR ticket.
However, the ticket date cannot be changed in the following cases:
　When the ticket date has been changed three times
　When changing to a different ticket type
　When changing to a date on which tickets are sold out, or a date for which not enough tickets remain
　When changing the date of one or some tickets in a multiple-ticket purchase
　When changing each ticket in a multiple-ticket purchase to a different date
　When changing to a date on which ticket sales have not yet started
　When changing to a date with a revised ticket price

Do I need to print my ticket?

1. Customers With Smartphones
You do not need to print out your ticket.
Enter the venue by showing your ticket, which can be accessed from the URL in your confirmation email. You can access your tickets from 00:00 on the admission date.

2. Customers Without Smartphones
After purchasing a ticket, you will need to print it out via the “Display e-ticket print page” button on the ticket screen, which you can access from 00:00 on the admission date.

Where can I view my purchased tickets?

If you purchased through the official ticket website, you can access your ticket from 00:00 on the admission date via the e-ticket URL in your confirmation email (subject: teamLab e-ticket purchase completed). 
If you do not receive the email, please contact us through the contact form. 
Please refrain from sending the e-ticket URL in your confirmation email to any third party.

What should I do if I haven't received the confirmation email?

If you do not receive the email, the following may have happened:

1. The email went to a folder other than your inbox.
Your email software’s filtering (automatic sorting) function may have placed the email in a different folder. Also check your spam folder and elsewhere.
2. Your email account is set to block certain emails.

Regarding ticket purchase
・Tickets will be sold only on the day of the event and may sell out. Also, prices vary.

・In general, tickets cannot be canceled or changed once purchased. However, the date can be changed for tickets directly purchased from the official ticketing website.

The date of the ticket may be changed up to 3 times. To do so, select 'Modify ticket date' displayed on the QR ticket and follow the procedure. Changes can be made up to 21:00 of the indicated date.

The ticket date cannot be changed in the following cases:

　- The date has already been changed 3 times

　- Changing to a different type of ticket

　- Changing to date that has sold out or has insufficient tickets left

　- Changing the date for a portion of tickets within a multiple-ticket purchase

　- Changing to multiple dates within a multiple-ticket purchase

　- Changing to a date that is not yet available for purchase

　- Changing to a date with a revised price

Tickets are date-specific, and may sell out.

・Prices include tax.

・Visitors with a disability certificate:

Discounted tickets are available for holders of a disability certificate, along with one accompanying person.

(Children's tickets cannot be further discounted, however, the accompanying adult is eligible for a discounted ticket if the child holds a disability certificate.)

The disability certificate will be requested at the entrance gate, so please make sure that the accompanying person enters at the same time.

The disability certificate can be issued by any country.

The Mirailo ID app can be accepted in place of a Disability Certificate.

- Children (middle school and below) must be accompanied by an adult who is 18 years old or above. There must be one accompanying adult for every three children, including children eligible for free entry.

- Children under 5 years old may enter for free.

- The opening time of the venue may change with prior notice on the ticket purchase page.

Notice to Visitors
・The venue cannot be held liable for visitors’ injury, loss, or other problems that may occur.

・Reselling tickets is prohibited. A ticket that has been resold will not allow entry to the venue. The venue cannot be held responsible for any problems with resold tickets.

・Certain artworks may not be available due to large crowds or maintenance.

・Artworks or artwork specifications may vary by season.

・The exhibition may be canceled due to circumstances of the venue.

・The exhibition may be (temporarily) canceled in case of inclement weather warnings such as severe wind, rain, and thunderstorms.

Please stay away from trees and evacuate to the nearest building if lightning strikes during opening hours.

・The exhibition may be canceled in case of earthquakes that are 4 or above on the seismic intensity scale.

・The exhibition may be canceled in case of bad weather that puts visitors' safety at risk at the venue.

Cancellation will be announced on the venue's official website and social media.

・Tickets can be refunded only if the venue has an unscheduled closure.

・Transportation costs to this venue will not be reimbursed even if the venue has an unscheduled closure.

・Please come to the entrance at the admission time indicated on the ticket and wait in line.

・There is no limit on the duration of your stay at the venue after admission.

・Re-entry is not permitted.

・During busy periods, you may be required to wait outside before entry.

Please come with appropriate preparation against heat exhaustion or the cold depending on the season.

・If you would like to leave the line temporarily, please make sure that someone in your party stays behind.

・Animals are not allowed at the venue excluding assistance dogs.

・Please look after your own personal belongings. The venue will not not be liable for any stolen or lost items.

・The venue is dark with uneven and unsteady footing in many places. Be aware of your own actions as well as those around you. If you are with young children, please watch over them closely for their safety.

・There are many unpaved areas at the venue, so comfortable footwear such as sneakers is recommended. Please refrain from wearing clothes that expose a lot skin to avoid insect bites.

・The artworks may produce flashing lights and loud sounds.
