teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Built over a period of seven years from 1601, Fukuoka Castle is the largest castle in Kyushu. Often referred to as the Stone Castle, its center the Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru palaces were made up entirely of stone walls. The beautiful four layers of the stone walls make this vast site a magnificent national historic treasure.

This exhibition is a part of teamLab's Digitized Nature art project. The concept behind the project is that non-material digital technology can turn nature into an art space as it is, without physically altering it.

teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins will transform the grounds and historic castle ruins of Fukuoka into an art space that transforms interactively. The artworks are influenced by the wind and rain, as well as by the behavior of people, making nature and the people become a part of the artworks, and a part of the long continuity of time. The artworks, people, and nature; the self and others; the past and the present; all form a continuity without boundaries.

Pillars of Constant Flux

All life exists within the flow of matter and energy, and the flow itself creates and maintains its structure.This differs fundamentally from objects that possess an independent, static, and stable structure, such as stones, iron, or the artifacts humans have historically created.
The artwork does not stand by trapping air inside and relying on its internal pressure. The inlet and outlet are the same size, and air continuously flows through the inside. By that very flow, the artwork stands, maintaining its structure and existence. If the flow stops, the material remains, but the artwork ceases to exist.
Here, the object is not being moved by the flow. The flow itself creates the structure and gives rise to existence.
The artwork is strongly influenced by the environment, such as wind, rain, and humidity, significantly changing its movement and height. As long as the environment that gives rise to existence is maintained and the flow continues, the artwork’s existence is maintained even whilst it constantly changes shape.
It is continually moving, flexible, soft, and fragile.
Pillar of Constant Flux is an attempt to expand sculpture from a fixed object into an existence whose structure continues to be generated by a continuous flow within an open environment. Rather than the artist directly creating the shape, the artist creates an environment in which existence is born. Here, the condition for the existence of sculpture shifts from matter to the order created by flow.

Autonomous Resonating Life

When an ovoid is pushed by people or wild animals, or knocked over by heavy rain or strong winds, it shines brightly and emits a tone as it rises back up on its own. The surrounding ovoids respond one after another, creating a continuity of light and tone.The light and tone of the ovoids also spread to the nearby artwork Resonating Trees, continuing through the artwork space. The space is transformed by people’s behavior, the environment, and the surrounding artworks, making people and the environment part of the artwork.

Resonating Trees

The light of the trees in this artwork responds to the continuous light from the artwork Autonomous Resonating Life, producing a tone and changing colour. That light and tone then spreads continuously, one by one, to the surrounding trees.If a wave of light comes from afar, it signifies the presence of people there. People gain a heightened sense of awareness of the existence of other people in the same space and the environment.
This artwork is part of the Digitized Nature art project. Digitized Nature is an attempt to explore how nature can become art as it is, without destroying it.
The shapes, textures, and changes of the forest trees themselves inherently contain a long period of time, the continuity of life, and relationships with the ecosystem. While a tree itself is part of an ecosystem, it also hosts life on its surface and inside, forming an ecosystem of its own. Unlike physical objects made by humans, the contours of its existence are ambiguous.
By layering non-physical materials such as sensing, networks, light, and sound onto these trees, the trees, remaining as they are, respond to each other and form a single continuous field as a collective. This is not an attempt by humans to sculpt nature as a material, but an endeavor in which the trees, shaped over a long period of time and within the ecosystem, rise up as a resonating collective sculpture just as they are.
Here, humans are not the only ones who change the artwork. The body, others, wild animals, the environment, trees, and surrounding artworks are all connected to the same ecosystem-like responsive field. Individual trees do not exist independently as a single completed entity, but continue to exist within relationships. People do not just look at the artwork; they enter into the resonance of the trees and sense the presence of others, wild animals, and the environment through the continuity of light and sound.
This structure presents nature not as an object outside of the artwork, but as an ecosystem-like field that changes together with people and the environment.

Walk, Walk, Walk - Fukuoka Castle Ruins

A group of anonymous and diverse figures walk along the stone walls of Fukuoka Castle Ruins.
People can stay with these figures or leave them, and watch as they continue.
The Zen expression “Hoho kore dojo” says every step is a place to learn. The figures of the artwork walk endlessly while confronting new situations. Walking after the figures or confronting new figures one after another, people also make choices along their own path.
The artwork is not a pre-recorded image that is played back: it is created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. Previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur. The picture at this moment can never be seen again.

Enso on Ancient Stone Wall

Among the stone walls of the Fukuoka Castle Ruins, the stone walls of the Tenshudai were constructed with the oldest technique of Nomenzumi (a method of stacking natural stones as they are). In this artwork, Enso is drawn infinitely on these stone walls.
The black lines drawn with light express the absence of light, and cannot be distinguished from the shadows of the stone walls that have been weathered over the past several hundred years. The black calligraphy and the black shadows created by the long passing of time become one, infinitely drawing Enso on the stone walls.Enso blurs the physical boundaries of the stone walls, and creates a new time space.
Enso is the Zen practice of drawing a circle with a single brushstroke. This artwork depicts Enso drawn as Spatial Calligraphy. As the three-dimensional stroke rotates, there are moments when its circular shape is revealed.
Spatial Calligraphy is a form of calligraphy drawn in space that teamLab has been exploring since it was founded. The artwork reconstructs calligraphy in three-dimensional space to express the depth, speed, and power of the brushstroke.
Back in ancient times, Enso was drawn in space using sticks, to symbolize the concepts of enlightenment, truth, the universe, and equality, in a figurative manner. The circle is also a reflection of the viewer’s inner self, thus its interpretation depends on the viewer.

Continuous Life and Death at the Now of an Ancient Tree

The giant tree standing in the forest of the castle ruins has taken its present form over many years, spreading its roots into the earth, thickening its trunk, and extending its branches.
People are usually unable to perceive the existence of periods of time far longer than their own lives, and that that time is continuous with the present. However, when confronting the giant tree, people realize that an endlessly long accumulated time is inherent within its overwhelming shape and texture.
We named this giant existence carved by a long span of time, Time-Sculpted Existence.
Within this giant existence, flowers repeat the cycle of life and death, the time of continuous life flows, and it continues to transform due to the existence of people living in the present.
Entering the forest of the castle ruins, wandering, and becoming one with this overwhelming existence, it becomes apparent that the endlessly long accumulated time is continuous with this very moment.
And when walking through the overlap of the endlessly long time accumulated in the tree and the time of continuous life, people physically realize that their own existence is part of a boundless continuity of a long, long time.

Spatial Calligraphy of Wind

* On sunny days with wind
On sunny days when the wind blows, this artwork appears in the sky. And when the wind stops, it disappears.
Materials made by humans, such as concrete, maintain a stable structure on their own much like stone.
Vortices on the other hand are created and sustained by the water that continuously flows inwards and outwards, maintaining an ordered structure within that flow. Life similarly maintains order through the continuous inward and outward flow of energy and matter through food.
This artwork does not float in the sky by trapping air inside and relying on its internal pressure. The inlet and outlet are the same size, and the wind continuously flows through the inside. By that very flow, the structure of the lines dancing in the sky is created and its existence is maintained. The artwork has no structure by itself, but rather the structure emerges from the flow; it is soft and flexible like a life form. The flow is what creates order from chaos.
The wind that raises this artwork into the sky is natural wind. Humans cannot control when it blows, or how strongly. The existence of the artwork is grounded not in human intention, but in the environment. When the wind blows, lines are drawn in the sky, and when the wind stops, the lines disappear. The form of the lines continuously drawn in the sky is the form of the wind itself.
This artwork is an attempt to expand sculpture from a fixed object into an existence whose structure continues to be generated by a continuous flow within the open environment of the natural wind.

Stone Steps of Oblivion - Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Built in 1607, Fukuoka Castle is also known as the Stone Castle. The small stone steps of the remains of the castle are lit up and shine brightly.
The light of each step is autonomous, shining brightly and then fading as if breathing slowly.If a person goes close to the stairs the light glows strongly and a colour and sound tone resonates out.

The Materialization of Time

A type of lichen called umenokigoke— a symbiotic organism of fungi and algae—grows on the trunks of old trees. It represents the ultimate open system.
The lichen survives on sunlight and rain alone, entering a dormant state without water. It can even survive in outer space. While it enjoys a near-eternal lifespan in an open system with sunlight and rain, it quickly dies if the air is even slightly polluted, such as from exhaust fumes.
Growing at a slow pace of only 1mm to 5mm per year, umenokigoke is an existence for which modern internet searches only return methods on how to remove it. However, people of the Edo period called the unique texture of this lichen koshoku (antique color) or "weathered by time," and regarded it as possessing the highest virtue—a presence of long time that they could never create themselves.
Umenokigoke is perhaps The Materialization of Time.
In the past, masters such as Kanō Eitoku, Maruyama Ōkyo, and Itō Jakuchū painted countless blue-green dots on the trunks of old trees in their paintings. Those dots were proof that the trees had lived for a thousand years, a sign that determined the prestige of the painting.
Naturally, some types of umenokigoke emit yellow and blue light in the presence of ultraviolet light, but this is not visible during the day due to the strong light from other sources.
Under ultraviolet light, the vivid glow of these lichen flickers in the dark, capturing the trail of life that the forest has painted over a long span of time.It is a Time Painting, where the luminescence, materialized over long periods of time, emerges.

About Ticket

Will tickets be available on the day？

If tickets have not yet sold out, you can purchase same-day tickets from ARTNE TICKET ONLINE or Ticket PIA・7-Eleven.
Tickets are sometimes available for purchase at the venue, but those ticket prices may differ and they may be sold out.

Where can I buy tickets?

1. Via “ARTNE TICKET ONLINE”
Credit cards are accepted.
Only tickets purchased through ARTNE TICKET ONLINE allow up to three date/time changes.
* Changes can be made before the scheduled entry time.
* Tickets purchased through channels other than ARTNE TICKET ONLINE cannot be changed after purchase.
* The latest information, such as cancellations due to weather conditions, etc., will be sent to the e-mail address provided at the time of purchase.

Will the exhibition be open even if it rains?

The venue will be open. However, depending on conditions at the venue, it may be closed or temporarily closed. Please check the official social media channels for the latest updates.

Will you close/suspend the exhibition due to inclement weather?

If a storm warning, heavy rain warning, or thunder advisory is in effect, opening of the venue may be delayed, or it may be closed or temporarily closed.

Can large items such as carry-on suitcases be brought into the venue or stored on-site?

Large items such as carry-on suitcases cannot be brought into the venue.
Belongings cannot be stored at the venue, so please store them elsewhere before arrival.

Regarding accessibility (persons with mobility impairment, wheelchair users, strollers, etc)

Wheelchair users and visitors with strollers may enter the venue, but some artworks may not be accessible to them for safety reasons. For safety reasons, please do not carry a stroller with a child in it.
Matsunoki-zaka, the entrance and exit route on the west side of the venue for wheelchair users and visitors with strollers or other mobility aids, has a steep slope. - The artworks may produce flashing lights and loud sounds.

- For environmental conservation, please take your garbage home with you.

- Media filming may take place without prior notice. If you do not wish to be featured in the coverage, please inform our staff.

- You may be asked to provide identification upon entry.
