Digital Art

2001

teamLab aims to explore how people can connect with the world in new ways, through new relationships between people and digital art.

By Liberating Expression from Material Substances,
Transformation Itself can Become the Subject of Expression

Before people started using digital technology, expression and information had to be presented in some physical form with mass, such as ink and paper. However, with the advent of digital technology, human expression and information have been liberated from material substances, and have come to be able to exist on their own. Artworks up until now have existed through physical tools such as paint and canvas, and have existed in a fixed, physical state. However, now that expression has been liberated from material substances, it is possible for it to exist independently, in a free and flexible form. Digital technology has furthermore enabled change itself to be expressed more freely and precisely. It has become possible to express the process of change under the influence of people’s behavior, and the artwork’s surroundings. By creating artworks that interact with people, viewers are able to participate in the works.

Expansion and Space Adaptability

No longer limited to the physical medium, digital technology has made it possible for artworks to expand easily, offering a greater degree of autonomy within the space. It is now possible for artworks to exist on a much larger scale and become entire artwork spaces, enabling viewers to physically step inside the artworks and experience them more directly.
