Art collective teamLab’s nighttime open-air museum teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka at Nagai Botanical Garden will unveil a new artwork, Life is the Sea Flickering in the Dark, on September 3rd, as the white madagascar periwinkles reach their peak bloom. This artwork will be on view until September 27th.
When people or wild animals approach and stand still, the white madagascar periwinkles shine brightly and emit a sound tone. The surrounding flowers also respond one after another, continuing to resonate the light and tone.
The artwork space is transformed by the physical behavior of people and the movement of wild animals, and the people and wild animals become part of the artwork.

On early autumn nights, Madagascar periwinkle flowers emerge as sculptural phenomena where the existence of life and perception intersect.
When people or wild animals approach and stand still, the Madagascar periwinkles shine brightly and emit a sound tone. The surrounding periwinkle flowers also respond one after another, continuing to resonate the light and tone. If a wave of light approaches from the other side, it signifies the presence of a person or a wild animal beyond.
The artwork space is transformed by the physical behavior of people and the movement of wild animals, and the people and wild animals become part of the artwork. Each individual periwinkle flower does not exist in isolation, but exists within a web of relationships. As people step into the resonating Madagascar periwinkles, they sense the presence of other people and wild animals through a continuous flow of light and sound.
