Regarding teamLab Borderless
What is teamLab Borderless?
teamLab Borderless is a museum of art created with digital technology by the art collective teamLab. It is a "museum without a map" made up of artworks without boundaries: its artworks leave their rooms, move, and influence one another, together forming one continuous world. Visitors immerse their whole body in that world, wandering through the museum and exploring and discovering the artworks for themselves. It first opened in Odaiba in 2018 as teamLab's first museum in Japan, and relocated to Azabudai Hills in 2024.
What is the concept of teamLab Borderless?
The concept of teamLab Borderless (officially, "teamLab Borderless: MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM") is to "wander, explore, and discover in one continuous world without boundaries." There is no map and no set route inside — you discover the artworks by wandering through the museum on foot. You may find yourself back in the same artwork space more than once, but because the artworks keep moving and changing, even the same space offers a different experience each time. Many of the works are also interactive, responding to visitors' movement. The artworks range from light sculptures to "EN TEA HOUSE," where you experience art through drinking tea. These artworks leave their rooms, move, relate to and influence one another, forming one continuous world without boundaries. Wandering, exploring, and discovering within that world is what teamLab Borderless is all about.
What kind of artworks can I see?
teamLab Borderless is a museum without boundaries, made up of about 70 artworks. The artworks move beyond their own rooms, relate to and influence one another, lose the boundaries between them, and sometimes intermingle entirely. Together, they form one continuous world without boundaries. Several works, including the Light Sculpture series, Bubble Universe: Physical Light Spheres, Wobbly Light, Environmental Light, Microcosmoses: Wobbly Light, Environmental Light, and Memory of Topography, can only be seen at teamLab Borderless in Japan.
Do the artworks change by season?
Yes. Certain artworks change with the real seasons, with the flowers and scenery on display shifting throughout the year. You can time a visit around your favorite flower's season, or come back more than once to enjoy different flowers.
What is "EN TEA HOUSE"?
When tea is prepared in the bowl, flowers are born and bloom in the tea. As long as there is tea, the flowers keep blooming endlessly, and the tea in the bowl becomes an infinite world of flowers in continuous bloom. It's a tea house where you experience the artwork by drinking that infinitely expanding world as it is. You can drink tea or eat ice cream while experiencing the artwork. Set tickets combining admission and tea can also be purchased in advance.
What is the "Sketch Factory"?
The Sketch Factory is a factory where your teamLab experience can be produced as a gift. The fish and other creatures you draw in "Sketch Ocean" can be turned into badges, hand towels, T-shirts, tote bags, papercraft, puzzles, stickers, or magnets to take home. Each item is available for purchase.
What is the difference between teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets?
Borderless (Azabudai Hills; officially, "teamLab Borderless: MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM") is a "museum without a map," made up of artworks without boundaries. There is no map and no set route inside. Artworks leave their rooms, move, and influence one another, sometimes changing as a result. You immerse your whole body in this boundaryless art, wandering with intention and discovering a new world together with others. It opened in Odaiba in 2018; in 2021, based on its annual visitor numbers in 2019, it became the first teamLab museum to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's most visited museum dedicated to a single art group; and in 2024 it relocated and reopened at Azabudai Hills.
Planets (Toyosu; officially, "teamLab Planets TOKYO") is a museum where you walk through water. The artworks change in response to your movements and those of other people, becoming connected to your body and to others. Together with other people, you immerse your whole body inside these vast artworks, feeling them with your body and becoming one with the art. Along with areas where you walk barefoot through water to experience the artworks, there is a flower garden, an area of artworks that you perceive the world through with your body, and a café area where you can rest.
Both museums have many artworks that can only be seen there in Japan. At either museum, most visitors spend around 2 hours. Both use seasonal dynamic pricing, with adult admission starting from ¥3,600. About half of domestic visitors have been to both museums.
How is this different from the earlier teamLab Borderless in Odaiba?
The concept of a "museum without a map" remains the same, but with its 2024 move to Azabudai Hills, the museum was renewed with new artworks. It also exhibits works that premiered at Azabudai, including Bubble Universe: Physical Light Spheres, Wobbly Light, Environmental Light. And having moved into Azabudai Hills in central Tokyo, directly connected to Kamiyacho Station (Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line) and Roppongi-itchome Station (Namboku Line), it's now easier to reach than before.
What kind of awards or recognition has it received?
2018: Opened in Odaiba
2021: Recognized by Guinness World Records as the most visited museum dedicated to a single art group, based on annual visitor numbers in 2019 (Odaiba)
