teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Built over a period of seven years from 1601, Fukuoka Castle is the largest castle in Kyushu. Often referred to as the Stone Castle, its center the Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru palaces were made up entirely of stone walls. The beautiful four layers of the stone walls make this vast site a magnificent national historic treasure.

This exhibition is a part of teamLab's Digitized Nature art project. The concept behind the project is that non-material digital technology can turn nature into an art space as it is, without physically altering it.

teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins will transform the grounds and historic castle ruins of Fukuoka into an art space that transforms interactively. The artworks are influenced by the wind and rain, as well as by the behavior of people, making nature and the people become a part of the artworks, and a part of the long continuity of time. The artworks, people, and nature; the self and others; the past and the present; all form a continuity without boundaries.

Pillars of Constant Flux

The artwork is strongly influenced by the environment, such as wind, rain, and humidity, significantly changing its movement and height. As long as the environment that gives rise to existence is maintained and the flow continues, the artwork’s existence is maintained even whilst it constantly changes shape.
It is continually moving, flexible, soft, and fragile.

Autonomous Resonating Life

When each ovoid is pushed over by a person or wild animal, or blown over by heavy rain or wind, it shines brightly and emits a sound tone as it rights itself. The surrounding ovoids also respond one after another, and the light color and tone continues to resonate out.

Ever Blossoming Life Tree

Flowers bloom and scatter for eternity on a giant tree. A year's worth of flowers bloom over the course of an hour, continuously scattering and changing. Flowers are born, grow, bud, bloom, and eventually scatter, wither, and disappear. The flowers are in a continuous cycle of life and death, repeating forever.

Walk, Walk, Walk - Fukuoka Castle Ruins

A group of anonymous and diverse figures walk along the stone walls of Fukuoka Castle Ruins.
Viewers will make choices, as they confront the figures.

Enso on Ancient Stone Wall

The black lines drawn with light express the absence of light, and cannot be distinguished from the shadows of the stone walls that have been weathered over the past several hundred years. The black calligraphy and the black shadows created by the long passing of time become one, infinitely drawing Enso on the stone walls.

Stone Steps of Oblivion - Fukuoka Castle Ruins

The light of each step is autonomous, shining brightly and then fading as if breathing slowly.If a person goes close to the stairs the light glows strongly and a colour and sound tone resonates out. 

The Materialization of Time

Naturally, some types of umenokigoke emit yellow and blue light in the presence of ultraviolet light, but this is not visible during the day due to the strong light from other sources.Under ultraviolet light, the vivid glow of these lichen flickers in the dark, capturing the trail of life that the old plum tree has painted for over more than half a century.

Resonating Trees

The light of the trees in this artwork responds to the continuous light from the artwork Autonomous Resonating Life, producing a tone and changing colour. That light and tone then spreads continuously, one by one, to the surrounding trees.If a wave of light comes from afar, it signifies the presence of people, waves, or wind there. People gain a heightened sense of awareness of the existence of other people in the same space and the environment.

About Ticket

Will tickets be available on the day？

If tickets have not yet sold out, you can purchase same-day tickets from the official ticket website, ARTNE TICKET ONLINE.
Tickets are sometimes available for purchase at the venue, but those ticket prices may differ and they may be sold out.

Where can I buy tickets?

Credit cards are accepted.
Only tickets purchased through ARTNE TICKET ONLINE allow up to three date/time changes.
*Changes can be made before the scheduled entry time.
*Tickets bought outside of the official ticketing website cannot be changed  after purchase.
*The latest information, such as cancellations due to weather conditions, etc., will be sent to the e-mail address provided at the time of purchase.

2.Buy on site
On-site sales are for the day of the event only and may sell out. Also, prices vary.
Tickets purchased on-site can only be paid by credit card. We accept Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, and Diners Club.

Can I change or cancel the date of my ticket?

In general, tickets cannot be canceled once purchased.
However, the date/time can be changed for tickets directly purchased from the official ticketing website, ARTNE TICKET ONLINE.
The date/time of the ticket may be changed up to 3 times. To do so, select 'Modify ticket date' displayed on the ticket and follow the procedure. Changes can be made before the scheduled entry time.

The ticket date/time cannot be changed in the following cases:

Regarding ticket purchase

- Tickets for weekends, public holidays, and December 29–31 are date- and time-specific and may sell out.

- Certain artworks may not be available due to large crowds, maintenance or weather conditions.

- Artworks or artwork specifications may vary by season.

- There are no restrooms inside the exhibition area.

Please use the restrooms before entering.

- The exhibition may be canceled due to circumstances of the venue.

- The exhibition may be (temporarily) canceled in case of inclement weather warnings such as severe wind, rain, and thunderstorms.

- The exhibition may be canceled in case of bad weather that puts visitors' safety at risk at the venue.

- Cancellation will be announced on the venue's official social media.

- Tickets can be refunded only if the venue has an unscheduled closure.

- Transportation costs to this venue will not be reimbursed even if the venue has an unscheduled closure.

- Please come to the entrance at the admission time indicated on the ticket and wait in line.

- There is no limit on the duration of your stay at the venue after admission.

- Re-entry is not permitted.

- During busy periods, you may be required to wait outside before entry.

Please come with appropriate preparation against heat exhaustion or the cold depending on the season.

- If you would like to leave the line temporarily, please make sure that someone in your party stays behind.

Aside from assistance dogs (guide dogs, hearing dogs, and service dogs), pets are not permitted inside the venue.

*Pets are not permitted even if they are kept in a carrier.

- Only Assistance Dogs (guide dogs, hearing dogs, and service dogs) are allowed to enter. For safety reasons, entry is at your own risk.

Wheelchair users and visitors with strollers may enter the venue, but some artworks may not be accessible to them for safety reasons.

- Please look after your own personal belongings. The venue will not be liable for any stolen or lost items.

- The venue is dark with uneven and unsteady footing in many places. Be aware of your own actions as well as those around you. If you are with young children, please watch over them closely for their safety.

- There is a possibility that heavy, rain-soaked branches may fall (falling branches) or that trees may fall.

Please be aware of this and exercise caution. In the event of any falling objects, please notify a nearby staff member.

- There are many unpaved areas at the venue, so comfortable footwear such as sneakers is recommended. Please refrain from wearing clothes that expose a lot of skin to avoid insect bites.

- The artworks may produce flashing lights and loud sounds.

- For environmental conservation, please take your garbage home with you.

- Media filming may take place without prior notice. If you do not wish to be featured in the coverage, please inform our staff.

- You may be asked to provide identification upon entry.

Examples: driver's license, health insurance card, student card, passport, My Number card, any identification that provides valid proof of your name and age.

- Use of monopods, tripods, selfie sticks, etc. is prohibited.

- Filming or photography for commercial purposes is not permitted without prior consent.

- Please do not touch the projectors, sensors, lights, and other equipment for safety reasons.

- Do not bring food into the venue (including candy and gum). Only drinks are allowed.

- Fire is strictly prohibited at the venue. No smoking allowed.

- Please do not enter areas that are fenced off.

- Please do not enter areas where entry is prohibited.

- Please follow the staff's instructions. Visitors that do not follow them may be escorted out of the premises.
