Spatial Calligraphy: Line, Fish, and Shinkai2000

teamLab, 2015, Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

teamLab has been working on the Spatial Calligraphy series of works for several years. Spatial Calligraphy offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese sho (calligraphy) in an abstract space. The video artwork reconstructs Japanese sho in 3 dimensional space and express the depth, speed and power of the brush stroke.

Here, the space containing the Shinkai 2000, Japan’s first full-scale manned research submersible, was transformed into a work of art surrounded by letters of light, giving visitors the impression of the depth and power of the Shinkai 2000, as well as the sensation of floating in the deep ocean.
