The cosmos in the dark shine brightly.

When people stand still close to them, they shine more brightly and produce a tone. The light of that cosmos then radiates out, spreading to nearby cosmos as they resonate with the same tone. If light approaches from the opposite side it signifies the presence of people there, making people more aware of the existence of others in the same space.
