teamLab: Digitized Kairakuen Garden
Kairakuen Garden was created at the end of the Edo Period (1842), incorporating the surrounding scenery into its composition. The garden was designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and is considered to be one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan alongside Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa and Korakuen Garden in Okayama. In 2022, the garden will celebrate its 180th anniversary. Kairakuen Garden is home to 3,000 plum trees of around 100 varieties, and it is well known for its plum blossoms. Because of this wide variety of trees, the plum blossoms bloom over a longer period of time.
teamLab’s art project Digitized Nature explores how nature can become art. The concept of the project is that non-material digital technology can turn nature into art without harming it.
Humans cannot recognize time longer than their own lifespans. In other words, there is a boundary in our understanding of the long continuity of time.
The forms and shapes of nature have been created over many years and have been molded by the interactions between people and nature. We can perceive this long duration of time in these shapes of nature themselves. By using the shapes, we believe we can explore the boundary in our perception of the long continuity of time.
teamLab: Digitized Kairakuen Garden will transform this garden, where various types of plum trees bloom in spring, into an interactive art space that changes due to the presence of people.

teamLab
teamLab (f. 2001) is an international art collective. Their collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, and the natural world. Through art, the interdisciplinary group of specialists, including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects, aims to explore the relationship between the self and the world, and new forms of perception.
In order to understand the world around them, people separate it into independent entities with perceived boundaries between them. teamLab seeks to transcend these boundaries in our perceptions of the world, of the relationship between the self and the world, and of the continuity of time. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous, borderless continuity.
teamLab exhibitions have been held in cities worldwide, including New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Silicon Valley, Beijing, and Melbourne among others. teamLab museums and large-scale permanent exhibitions include teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets in Tokyo, teamLab Borderless Shanghai, and teamLab SuperNature Macao, with more to open in cities including Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Hamburg, Jeddah, and Utrecht.
teamLab’s works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Asia Society Museum, New York; Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, Istanbul; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and Amos Rex, Helsinki.

LuckyFM Ibaraki Broadcasting System
I am very pleased that LuckyFM Ibaraki Broadcasting System is once again organizing the exhibition teamLab: Digitized Kairakuen Garden this year at Kairakuen Garden, which is known as one of the ‘Three Great Gardens of Japan’.
We were grateful to welcome a total of 123,000 people to the garden last year, with many of them being residents of Ibaraki Prefecture. This year, we are extending the exhibition period to two months from February to March, and the Mito Plum Blossom Festival will also take place during this period. I hope that many visitors will take this opportunity to come to Kairakuen Garden and discover new fascinating aspects of it.
The situation with COVID-19 is still ongoing, so we are taking thorough measures for visitors to be able to come to the exhibition feeling reassured.
It is my hope that teamLab: Digitized Kairakuen Garden will further vitalize the local region, lead to increased tourism in the area, and bring even more liveliness into Mito, Ibaraki.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.
