Cold Life

A calligraphic series of brush strokes modeled in virtual 3-D space forms the character 生 (Japanese/Chinese for life) which transforms into a tree. As time passes, various life forms begin to grow from within the tree.

This artwork was created by peeling away the surface of the artwork Life Survives by the Power of Life, 2011.

In computer graphics, and similarly in this digital work, wireframe models created with high levels of data are rendered as 3-D objects. When the surfaces of these computer-generated images are peeled away, their underlying mesh-like structures are revealed. Expressed by the intricacy of this work, teamLab exemplifies 3-D rendering in its stripped-down state while maintaining a highly complex and elaborate construction.

Nature brings us both blessings and disaster, and with the progress of civilization there are benefits and negative implications; nature and civilization are always connected. There is no absolute evil or true beauty. There is no easy way to understand, no simple way to arrange our feelings and our sensitivities. We must face every situation as it comes, to not despair, to face forward, and to go on with life.

teamLab has been working on the Spatial Calligraphy series since the collective formed. Spatial Calligraphy offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese sho (calligraphy) in an abstract space. It reconstructs Japanese sho in three-dimensional space and expresses the depth, speed, and power of the brushstroke. Butterflies, birds, animals, plants, and flowers appear from the calligraphy expressing the passing of the seasons. According to Zen Buddhist writing, “In all living things Buddha nature dwells.” All things are impermanent and the natural appearance of things is the Buddha nature. What we put into shape is that which we, the living, think is the heart of life.

Sefuri ILC High school!

From a request by Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga Prefecture with the aim of receiving an invitation for the particle physics research laboratory "ILC (International Linear Collider※1)," the promotional video produced by teamLab will be published on the Internet on video websites such as YouTube on April 19 th, 2013. "Sefuri ILC High School" is a promotional video for ILC (International Linear Collider) commissioned by Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga Prefecture. The materials used within the video, including the background music, are open to the public on the Internet as free material. Students of Saga Prefecture's Waseda High School explain the mechanics of the ILC in the massive particle physics research facility through a video in the style of a musical.
1:Current high school students explain the mechanics of particle physics through a musicalPersonifying the positrons and electrons that perform the collision experiments in the "ILC," they will explain how it all works in the style of a musical. When the electrons and positrons accelerate, the high school girls currently acting will be replaced by drawings in the academy drama's final collision.
2:A video fusing live action and animation
It appeals to various communities by using high-quality high-definition recordings of the beautiful scenery in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures, energetic high school girls, catchy melodies, and animation supported by high quality pictures.
3:The materials used are copyright free. Derivative works are welcome.
The materials used within the video, including the background music, are open to the public on the Internet as free material. We welcome the possibility that in the hands of different people, each creative effort will change the shape of this one video.
4:Participation by a diverse set of creators
Including Shota Mori who has attracted attention worldwide for the performance of the iPhone charger, various creators have participated in each part, from music, to choreography, to animation. Even though this work is less than 300 seconds and has had over an incredible amount 200 shots taken, it has incorporated the determination of the production team that have worked through scenes mere seconds long for extensive shots of scenes, costumes, props, motion graphics, animation, and more.
5:It is GIF-ized about the "Sefuri ILC High School" whole volume.
The Specially Page (Tumblr) which GIF-ized the whole volume of "Sefuri ILC High School" is exhibited.

※1 A massive experimental research facility for particle physics. The world's largest laboratory equipment for unraveling the mysteries of the universe. It reproduces the conditions immediately after the Big Bang when electrons and positrons were colliding near the speed of light. The "Sefuri Mountains" on the border of Fukuoka and Saga prefecture is a canidate site for construction.
