teamLab Phenomena Architecture
For over 20 years, teamLab Architects has continued to create spaces where the experience of the artwork and the experience of a space seamlessly connect without boundaries. What started as small spaces gradually expanded into larger spaces, eventually forming collective bodies where multiple artwork and spatial experiences are interconnected. The consistent element throughout this is that space is created starting from the experience itself.
Experiences are what broaden people’s senses of value, and leave lasting memories. What we consider important in this process is understanding what kind of forms are necessary to preserve individual memories of experiences. Based on the belief that architecture should serve to reinforce the memory of experiences, teamLab Architects and MZ Architects have jointly designed the architecture for teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi
For teamLab Phenomena, in its interior we have incorporated curved shapes found in nature that are physically recognized by the body. When experiences strongly incorporate physicality, they become remembered deeply. Through the curved forms that surround the body, the visual experience and physical experience become one in memory.
We believe that the exterior of architecture should be something that strengthens that memory of the experience inside teamLab Phenomena, shaped by the experience itself. In the architecture of teamLab Phenomena, the interior and exterior coexist as one entity, with no boundary between them. The curved forms found in nature lack any clear, purpose-driven shape or singular symbolic meaning. Instead, the interior and exterior become one and allow each individual’s experience to shape a unique impression in their mind.
The architecture of teamLab Phenomena, jointly-designed by teamLab Architects and MZ Architects, is structured from the inside out, with the experience of the artwork and space at the core. The exterior shape of the building is like a fabric draped over the collection of these internal experiences, and the interior and exterior are seamlessly unified.
